The Fireplace and the Waterhole
How can an urban space be both physically and intellectually stimulating? How can new meeting points be created and what makes them important? These questions were central in our development of the public art installation The Fireplace and the Waterhole created by the artist duo Mathias & Mathias for Espergærde Gymnasium and supported by the Danish Arts Foundation. It opened in 2021 and can be experienced by Espergærde Gymnasium.

The vision was to create a public art work that functions as a junction between the sports areas, the high school and the public. A place to meet and where the art demands that you are both physically and mentally present. The installation interprets the fireplace and the waterhole as the first places for interpersonal civilization and it tries to tie together the surrounding institutions and community.
The ideas for the installations were collectively developed with teachers from Espergærde Gymnasium and co-created together with students and teachers from Espergærde Gymnasium over a period of two years.
