VEGA Beyond

VEGA Beyond is an experimental exhibition space where artists have the opportunity to expand the live concert format. VEGA Beyond is the place where boundaries between art forms don’t exist. Here, sound, image and performance are mixed for new cross-media experiences. In the fall of 2023 and spring of 2024 I curated experiences with including the artists Nils Frahm, MØ, Röyksopp, Jeanette Albeck & musician Noah Rosannes, Ida Kvetny, Simon Littauer, Oyunn, Stuart Bailes, Frederik Kock Christiansen, Robert Borg, Dansk Modular.

Nils Frahm Residency

VEGA & FUNKHAUS Connection
The vision was to celebrate the artistic, collaborative process through concert experiences and installations merging traits from Nils Frahm’s music, the residency at VEGA and his universe at Funkhaus – his musical home in Berlin. Through an immersive sound installation at Ideal Bar and a light and sound installation connecting the foyer, staircase and Ideal Bar – all the way up to store VEGA, where the concerts were played in the evenings we aimed to provide the audience with an encompassing sensorial experience.

Light and Photo Installations
The light installations were created by sound technicians Stuart Bailes and Frederik Kock Christiansen in collaboration with Frahm. Using analogue lamps, the designs complement Nils Frahm’s analog-focused musical universe. These lights highlight architectural elements and handmade fabric screens crafted at VEGA, using materials like felt—similar to what Frahm uses to create his piano’s soft tones. Large screens screens display photos of FUNKHAUS, Frahm’s Berlin studio, taken by his father, Klaus Frahm.

Networked Spaces
As part of Frahm’s residency, “Networked Spaces” Simon Littauer created a sound installation blending sounds from himself, Øyunn, Otto Totlander, and Frahm. Created using a 16-speaker system, the 25-minute immersive soundscape invites visitors to explore the connection between music, architecture, and collective creation.

Profound Mysteries

In October 2023 we expanded the Norwegian electronic music duo Röyksopp’s recent releases Profound Mysteries into a 3D experience. The exhibition took its starting point in this quote from Röyksopp:

‘As human beings, what we don’t know vastly overshadows what we do know. As teenagers, we would discuss our own fascination and preoccupation with the infinite and the impossible – the most profound mysteries of life.’

Most people have experienced what Röyksopp describes in the quote. During our teenage years life opens up to us. Often through images, literature and music. Whether it’s finding solace in the lyrics of a favorite song or image or experiencing how visual expressions become a bridge that connects us with kindred spirits as we bond over discovering new artists and genres. These forms of creative expression hold a special place in young hearts and minds and have the power to bring us back to a state of wonder as we grow older.

Through situated videos, visuals and 3D sound created by Röyksopp and Jonathan Zawada we would like to invite you to join us on a collective journey to our young(er) selves – when we were open to mysteries.

Digital Dawn

In November 2023 we investigated how science fiction, speculative art and design shape our visions and understandings of possible futures. The arts have an ability to shape and predict our digital futures – the digital dawn.

In Digital Dawn you enter an immersive visual and sound environment. The experience is developed via a collaboration between Ida Kvetny, who created the visual universe, and composer, singer and actor Jeanette Albeck & musician Noah Rosannes, who composed the sound.

In this experience we invite you to question what digital dawn we are facing? How will our bodies evolve? What relationship are we going to have with our future digital selves, our avatar?
