Living Soil
Living Soil is an interdisciplinary artwork created by the artist Amalie Smith for the library and garden at Viborg Gymnasium.
Throughout 2024-25 the project will unfold in four acts involving the school’s visual arts, chemistry, biology, and biotechnology classes. Together, the four acts aim to cultivate a practical and visual understanding of soil as a living foundation for all life on the planet.
Students will co-create a 252 m² terrazzo floor incorporating terracotta elements, along with a garden that nourishes the micro-life within the soil. The process will be framed by a seminar on November 12, 2024, and interdisciplinary teaching materials developed in collaboration with Biotech Academy. Contributions from both artistic and scientific researchers will shape the materials, set to be published in the summer of 2025.
I’ve been curating and facilitating the seminar and teaching material in close collaboration with Amalie Smith. Graphic design is created by Hanna Bergman.
The project is suuported by Ny Carlsbergfondet.
